Tips for Hanging Art

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.- Pablo Picasso

My mom and I are huge fans of collecting art and assembling different pieces into gallery walls.  We have several throughout our home and some are hung salon style, with the art going from floor to ceiling, while others are hung into tightly clustered groups above chair rail moulding.  Hanging a gallery wall is one of the easiest ways to give a room a collected and time worn feel which we love.  One of the keys to having a successful gallery wall is to get your photos and art framed properly.

A favorite gallery wall by designer Miles Redd.

Here are 5 tips for framing from Robyn Pocker who is the third generation of her family’s J. Pocker Framing Company:

1. USE A MAT- AND CONSIDER A COLORFUL ONE.

“Warm white is safe, but I tell people to choose the color that drew them to the art in the first place. And a mat helps protect the work, too.”

2. CONSIDER THE ART’S HISTORY.

“Match your frame to your art’s roots. If it’s a Dutch still life, choose a frame with Dutch heritage. Your framer can help.”

3. GO 3D.

“Frame family memorabilia. Think outside the box, like a baby’s first pair of shoes or Grandpa’s WWII Air Force cap. This always makes for great conversation.”

4. CHOOSE QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

“Buy the best archival framing you can afford. Our industry spends a lot of time developing better materials, and it’s worth the money.”

5. THINK BEYOND BLACK.

“When framing black-and-white photography, consider gray and silver frames and mats, which help pick up warm tones in the photo.”
