Style is attitude, attitude, attitude.- Iris Apfel
Today’s Over 50 Style Icon is the irreverent and always fascinating Iris Apfel. At 93, she has become something of a sensation in the fashion world since her collection of over-the-top and beyond fabulous clothing and accessories appeared in a show at the Met in 2005. Prior to that, she had pretty much been under the radar fashion wise as she had worked as a famed interior designer for many years, in Manhattan, and had also founded Old Weavers, a textile company, with her husband, Carl.

The show was a smash success and suddenly Iris was catapulted into the stratosphere of the high fashion world. People instantly fell in love with her amazing signature style of bold, round glasses, shocking white hair and layer-upon-layer of rare and unique jewelry. In a sea of fashion ubiquity, Iris is indeed a rare bird and loves wearing stacks of bangles and layers of turquoise necklaces (which I adore).
She has an amazing zest for life and can hardly keep up with the demand for her in the fashion world. The late, famed filmmaker Albert Maylses recently made a documentary about her life and it’s in theaters now. Of course, I would love to see it but it’s not showing in my small town (insert sad face). She also has jewelry line with HSN called Rara Avis and recently appeared as the face of Kate Spade’s spring campaign along with Karlie Kloss (How cool is that?!!).

As much as I love Iris’s style, my favorite thing about her is her zest for life. At an age when most people have considerably slowed down, she is loving life and busier than ever. Here’s to never giving up!
