Meet me for lunch at American Kitchen

My mom and I recently had a fabulous lunch at American Kitchen located in historic downtown Bay City, Michigan.  I can’t say enough about how fabulous the food is.  The menu is based on classic American comfort food with a gourmet twist.  There is also a focus on made-in-Michigan products.


The atmosphere is upscale casual and features a sleek and modern decor that’s the perfect foil to the down-home comfort food.  The American Kitchen is a must eat whether you’re a local or visiting from out of town.

Their specialties include burgers, macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches.  But these aren’t just your typical American fare.  The burgers are made from beef that is a special house blend which is just part of what makes them so delicious.

Every single burger, which are all cleverly named, from The 50/50 to the The Kentucky Derby are topped with specialty condiments like an over easy hen’s egg or bourbon glazed onions. These are literally the best burgers we’ve ever eaten.  And as burger aficionados that’s saying a lot.


We split the Mushroom and Swiss which was deliciously drippy and juicy in just the way the best burgers should be.  Our taste buds literally danced in joy as we bit into the combination of gooey Swiss cheese, savory grilled button mushrooms and creamy olive oil mayo.

As if that wasn’t enough gastronomic delight, we had a side order of crispy shoe string fries and the AK’S signature mac and cheese served in a small cast iron skillet. The macaroni and cheese is by far the best in the Great Lakes Bay region. Its creamy deliciousness is a result of a blend of three cheeses: smoked Vermont cheddar, sharp cheddar and Parmesan. This creates a delicious sauce that just perfectly coats the Cavatappi pasta.  It’s literally heaven on a fork.


The grilled cheese sandwiches are made on Spatz’s bread which is something of a local legend in these parts.  You just don’t understand how delicious a grilled cheese can be until you’ve tasted one made with Spatz’s. But that’s an entire post for a different day.

The AK’s grilled cheeses all have a unique spin and feature ingredients ranging from fried eggs layered with bacon to pan-seared meatloaf topped with wild mushroom gravy.

The bar menu is extensive and features one of Michigan’s best selections of premium bourbons.  There is also a lengthy offering of craft beer from some of the state’s top breweries.  The cocktail menu also tips its hat to Michigan by featuring New Holland’s Freshwater Michigan Amber Rum, craft distilled in Holland, MI, in its Michigan mojito.  We can’t wait to try that!
