I deeply believe that a beautiful decor can have a beneficial influence on our lives.- Albert Hadley
The annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House is currently open in Manhattan and I absolutely fell in love with some of the rooms. Every year, I look forward to seeing what the designers have put together for this fabulous charity event which raises funds for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club of New York. One of my favorite spaces this year was a red gingham dining room designed by Los Angeles based interior designer Mark D. Sikes.
Mark with his adorable French Bulldog Lily.
Mark has a brilliant eye and his interiors combine the best elements of traditional design with dashes of modernism thrown in for some edge. He was selected to design the dining room for Kips Bay and it did not disappoint!!
OMG!! I love it!!
He calls the space “Up in the Villa” and says that Italian socialite Marella Agnelli’s villa was the inspiration for the room. This room has the perfect mix of casual, modern and traditional elements. I love the way Mark so cleverly thought to put a crystal chandelier over a wicker dining table. It just goes to prove that juxtaposition is always at the heart of good design.
The gingham walls are the perfect foil to the more formal antique pieces like the pastoral painting and the Chinese porcelain. Gingham never goes out of style!
The oriental rug layered over the wall-to-wall sisal carpet adds just the right amount of texture.
Stay tuned for more coverage of the show house in the coming days!
